This project was realized during a return to my family's places of origin, in Calabria. Following the maternal branch of my family tree, I crossed houses, streets and landscapes in search of what crosses generations: gestures, glances, domestic spaces and subtle traces through which memory continues to be transmitted.
Made predominantly in black and white, the work is not intended to document a family history, but to explore the way in which the maternal line continues to inhabit bodies, everyday gestures and places. Each photograph is placed between presence and absence, where the landscape becomes an archive and the memory takes the form of a silent and living legacy.
Where does the memory pass?
Generations held within the same place. Faces separated by time, brought together again by memory. A line that continues beyond absence, passing from one body to another, from one face to another.
The men portrayed also carry fragments of this inheritance, making visible a memory that moves through bodies beyond time.
In 1990, I photographed my family on film. The negatives have been lost over time; only a few prints remain, becoming precious objects, much like the memories they hold. The old photographs become fragments of memory, while the new images search within people and places for the persistence of a family line .
